LED NBA G LEAGUE IN BLOCKED SHOTS PER GAME AND TOTAL BLOCKS
WILMINGTON – JUNE 17, 2020 – The NBA G League announced earlier today that Delaware Blue Coats rookie Christ Koumadje has been named the 2019-20 NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year. He earned the honor in a vote by the league’s 28 head coaches and general managers. Koumadje is the first player in Delaware franchise history to receive Defensive Player of the Year honors.
The 7-foot-4 Koumadje led the NBA G League in blocked shots per game (4.0) and total blocks (133) this season. His 133 blocks are a Delaware single-season franchise record. In 33 games with the Blue Coats, the 23-year-old also averaged 11.3 points and 10.9 rebounds in 26.4 minutes per game.
On Feb. 1, Koumadje recorded the only triple-double with blocks in the NBA G League this season, posting 18 points, 20 rebounds and an NBA G League season-high 12 blocks in a 111-103 road victory over the Erie BayHawks.
Koumadje, a Chad native, recorded five blocks or more in 19 games during the 2019-20 campaign. He swatted multiple shots in 31 of his 33 appearances.
Behind Koumadje, the Blue Coats topped the NBA G League in blocks per game (7.3), finished second in opponents’ field goal percentage (.440) and ranked ninth in defensive rating (107.4).
