Two-Way Tuesday | Training Camp Q&A

By Matt Murphy | Blue Coats Beat | October 30, 2018

The two-way players who will spend time with both the Philadelphia 76ers and the Delaware Blue Coats during the 2018-19 season are second-round draft pick Shake Milton and third-year pro Demetrius Jackson. In each edition of Two-Way Tuesday, either Milton or Jackson will be in the spotlight.

This week, Milton and Jackson share the spotlight again.

The focus: Thoughts from both players on Blue Coats’ training camp.

Jackson joined Milton and the rest of his Blue Coats teammates on Thursday after dressing for the 76ers’ road games in Detroit and Milwaukee earlier in the week.

On Saturday, the Blue Coats traveled to Washington D.C. for a scrimmage against the G League’s newest franchise, the Capital City Go-Go, the NBA G League affiliate of the Washington Wizards.

Read Milton and Jackson’s thoughts in anticipation of the team’s Nov. 3 season opener, below.

Blue Coats Beat: What have been your main takeaways from training camp?

Demetrius Jackson: We have the potential to be pretty good. We’ve got a long way to go in terms of our organization and our togetherness, but I think it can be a successful year. I think we can have a strong year. We just need to play hard. It’s definitely going to be one of those teams that wins off their grit and their hard work, and just kind of seeing it through. It’s going to be a great year.

BCB: What did you think of the team’s performance in the first scrimmage?

Shake Milton: I think it went about as well as expected for a group of guys who haven’t really been on the floor together for that long. I saw some good things, but of course there’s always things that we can work on and fine tune as we get ready for the season. Hopefully those types of things will help us make a deep run.

BCB: What were some of the things that you guys think that you can improve on?

Milton: Just communication and playing together. At the end of the day, we know that everybody here wants to win. So it’s just about finding a way to collectively come together and do that.

BCB: Demetrius, what’s the chemistry been like so far with this group?

Jackson: The chemistry is good. We’ve got a great group of guys—that’s for sure. Everybody brings positive energy to practice and everybody competes hard. Talented guys. We’ve definitely got a great group of guys and now we’ve just got to put that together. And that comes with just playing—playing in the games together. If you look at NBA teams—guys like that, they’re together all year. Multiple years. And that’s why it clicks so well for them. So we have to just keep playing together and I think it’ll come.

BCB: What’s it like playing with [former Notre Dame teammate] Matt Farrell again?

Jackson: It’s great to play with him. We played together at Notre Dame. He’s a great player. We compete and play hard against each other. He’s like a brother to me, so I love competing with him. But I love competing with everybody.

BCB: Shake, why should fans be excited about this particular group of players that you have here in camp?

Milton: I think just [because of] the energy that we’re going to be able to bring to the floor. We’re going to play hard and we’re going to make every game exciting. And we’re going to do our best to win every single one.

BCB: What are the strengths of this group?

Milton: I think we have great leadership, great shooting, and we have athletic bigs who are willing to do their work. And if everybody does their part, we’ll be all right.
